Mothers Day
Competing Interests: Balancing the Challenges of Union Work & Motherhood
Raven McDowell was a participant in the MCF/ARC 2nd Chance Bootcamp, but she is first and foremost a mother to a five-year old son.
Early in life she was exposed to the harsh realities of her low-income Los Angeles neighborhood and fell victim to those looking to exploit her. As a result, of lack of opportunity and finding herself on the wrong path she was incarcerated. Eventually able to escape her circumstances with the help of several organizations, Raven enrolled in a rehabilitation program, graduated from Bootcamp and became part of the painter’s union.
Having experienced her personal journey, Raven realized where she could make the greatest impact and has worked toward becoming a certified rehab counselor. She’s just began her job as a caseworker and will graduate after the completion of her studies next month.
In constant communication with her 5-year son she is working to regain full-custody and is excited about new life and better environment she has created for them.
Happy Mother’s Day to Raven and all the women who go above and beyond to provide a good life for their children.
